All of the episode titles are from songs by heavy metal/hard rock bands

Narrative

It follows a struggling high school heavy metal band who use the town’s sudden interest in the occult to start earning themselves a reputation as a satanic metal band, until a strange series of events triggers a witch hunt that leads them back to them. Hysteria by Def Lepard, Heaven’s on fire by KISS, Speaking in tongues by Meatloaf, Can I play with madness by Iron Maiden, Die young by Black Sabbath, Mother by Danzig, It’s late by Queen, and Dance Macabre by Ghost. An okay show for the most part, you can get through the slow parts (anything with kids) which makes it tolerable.

Such a weird mix of different eras throughout the decade

My big problem with these retro style shows like this and Stranger Things is that they never quite manage to capture the 80s well, especially the time period they claim it to be, not my 80s. Clothes and style from, say, the 82s, and then stuff from the next scene that we didn’t have or do until 89. Would it also be wrong to use a CRT filter or lower non-progressive scan resolution to really give the 80s feel?

We were never that diverse either

Video games do it so well now, Late Night With the Devil is a perfect example of an era that feels like an era. Haircuts almost always look like wigs or a cowlick. Especially in the Midwest in the clique-centric 80s.

This makes it hard to see as someone the age of the adults on this show who was there from Flock Of Seagulls to New Kids to AC/DC to Kid N’ Play as a card-carrying member, not my 80s, not even a representative of the era. If you get past that and call it fantasy, mediocre… The final season of “What We Do in the Shadows” is one of the biggest TV and streaming premieres this month.
