Quite an entertaining film with two demanding lead roles and two supporting roles that require excellent actors. The first two are played by Zoe Saldaña and Karla Sofia Gascón, the second by Selena Gomez and Adriana Paz.
You’ve earned it
Saldaña, in particular, is a revelation from writer-director Jacques Audiard’s previous films (The Beat that My Heart Skipped, A Prophet, The Taste of Rust and Bone and The Sisters Brothers) and each one was memorable. in his own way. None of them prepared me for this, so hats off to him for not getting stuck in a genre rut. Emilia Pérez has a lot of story and a lot of singing to offer.
Otherwise, the songs drag the movie down
When the song is combined with Damien Jalet’s concise choreography, the effect is exhilarating. They are musically light, do not go deep and therefore do not meet the dramatic demands placed on them. They are at their best in rap-oriented songs where the rhythm is the most important element. The moral of Emilia Pérez seems to be that we can never let go of the past, change who we are or what we want.
