This show only has the most tangential relationship with the original series
Narrative
Follows Madeline Matlock as she rejoins the work force at a prestigious law firm, where she uses her wily tactics to win cases and expose wrongdoing.. A gender-flipping takeoff on the original 1986 TV series of the same name, Matlock (1986), starring Andy Griffith in the title role of criminal defense attorney Ben Matlock. For legal reasons they had to give Dean Hargrove a "based on the series Matlock" credit..
Remake of Matlock (1986)
For Matlock to be hired by a New York law firm they would have had to have checked her law license status through one of three official mechanisms, each of which is carefully managed by the state. This would have verified identity, address, current license status, disciplinary actions, etc.. "Matlock In Name Only".
But is that enough for more than one season?
I am not sure if the showrunner or the CBS executives thought of reusing the Matlock name. It wasn’t necessary, just say Kathy Bates, we are there. If you want a throwback, just allude to "Harry's Law".OK, so other than the name and general occupation, there is no other real connections, so take this series on its own terms. The biggest plus is , of course, Kathy Bates.
The writing and direction will need to step up to give Ms
Bates is a show worthy of her skills.Pilots can sometimes be rough to figure out. Is this the best it will get, or can they improve to meet, or exceed, expectations?I am hoping it gets better, although the trailer for the next episode does not give me high hopes. They have set up "Matlock" as being a very shrewd character, but then seem to want to play it for slapstick?
