Coppola abandoned the project entirely in 2007 and didn’t start developing it again until 2019
Narrative
The city of New Rome faces a battle between Cesare Catilina, a brilliant artist in favor of a utopian future, and the greedy mayor Franklin Cicero. Among them is Julia Cicero, whose loyalties are divided between her father and her lover. Francis Ford Coppola wrote the screenplay in the early 1980s, but the film was shelved in part due to its financial debts. Pre-production finally began in 2001 after shooting 30 hours of second unit footage and table readings with Paul Newman, Uma Thurman, Robert De Niro, James Gandolfini, Nicolas Cage, Leonardo DiCaprio, Russell Crowe, Edie Falco and Kevin Spacey. the project was canceled after the 9/11 attacks because a scene from the script (page 166) “predicted”; attacks.
It’s just the same footage flipped and slightly tilted
The security video of Cicero entering the Caesars office is supposed to be two different cameras, as the small text in the upper left corner suggests. The film could have been set in a more realistic setting
Unclear feelings. Megalopolis is an epic and goofy mix of different movies (Babylon, Casanova, Moulin Rouge, Cabaret, Batman, Hudsucker Proxy and the Hollywoodland miniseries, etc.). Coppola recycles many styles of some famous directors like Luhrmann, Chazelle, Burton, Aronofsky, Fellini and Visconti. His own voice is somewhere in the passing details that unfortunately remind of his weaker films like “One from The Heart”. Then the Megalopolis fantasy would be more effective and give a wow feeling.
There were thoughtful and beautiful ideas
And what is the point of the stupid and unwarranted theatrics or should I just say theatrics? I personally hate this kind of approach that makes me throw up Baz Luhrmann in my mouth. It seriously undermines the credibility of the story. On that point, there are a lot of gratuitous moments for no reason: the dropping of hats, some weird dance posing during the first scene, and the atmosphere in general. Still, I enjoyed the last quarter of the movie.
The ending was also nice
The story is pretty good with it’s connection to ancient Rome etc. And without the continued interventions, the film might have a chance to be a decent tale for adults. Unfortunately, the chaotic and restless theatrical silliness just eats up too much of everything..
