I was very enthusiastic about that film even though I’m not a big fan of Fargeat’s debut film “Revenge”. I liked her as a director, but not as a screenwriter. While that film had an interesting visual style, the script was poor & stupid and the characters were uninteresting. However, she has improved a lot since her last film. "Substance" it looks amazing, the shots, score, editing, production design and even the costumes are well thought out. The script is also excellent (she actually won the best screenplay award at Cannes for "The Substance"), the decisions the characters make are understandable – they are the result of the characters' determination to achieve one’s goals. I also loved Demi Moore’s performance (it’s worth mentioning that I didn’t think she was a good actress at all, but after watching that movie, the first thought that came to my mind was that maybe she’s not a bad actress, she’s just been in bad movies), that’s definitely the peak of her career. Margaret Qualley is great as always. Even Dennis Quaid, despite his limited screen time, gives an entertaining and engaging performance. Probably the most talked about part of that film is the blood and body horror elements. And, yes, I have to admit that this movie is quite extreme and some viewers may find it difficult to watch. Personally, I didn’t feel disgusted or anything during those scenes, because I’m a big fan of disturbing cinematography, so I’m used to that stuff, but I understand that it might be a rough trip for others. It proves how great the makeup artists did their job (I’d be happy to see this film nominated for an Oscar for “best makeup and hair”) and how sick and twisted Fargeat’s imagination is. Overall, strongly recommend this movie. It might not be for everyone, but it’s worth checking out and seeing for yourself, because even if you don’t like it, you can’t deny that it’s not one of the craziest, most extreme, and most interesting films of the year (or even the decade)..
